Reborn, Reawakened, Rekindled novel Chapter 550

Hiram's barrage of questions left me somewhat startled, struggling to keep up.

Had all these queries been planted by Karina?

Hiram, however, meant no harm. When he asked if I would remarry Neil, there was no worry or displeasure in his eyes, just a hint of confusion.

"Hiram, these adult matters are not your concern. And most likely, I won't be remarrying your father," I responded after regaining my composure, offering him a reassuring smile.

"No remarriage?" A flicker of disappointment crossed Hiram's small face as he murmured, "But Dad seems to really like you."

I was taken aback. As for Neil's feelings towards me, I didn't want to delve into it. All I knew was that there was no chance for us anymore. But judging by Hiram's tone, it seemed he was still hoping for my reunion with Neil?

Suddenly, I realized Hiram was deftly changing the subject, and I almost fell for it!

"Hold on, we were discussing what your mom told you earlier. How did we end up talking about me and your father?" I quickly redirected our conversation back to the original topic.

Hiram pouted, "Mommy didn't say anything, really. She just misses me and wants me to focus on my treatment."

No matter how much I prodded, Hiram refused to spill what transpired between him and his mother. My patience started to wear thin, and I felt a sense of loss. After all, Karina was still his biological mother, and I was just a temporary caregiver. Even if Hiram had grown fond of me, he wouldn't "betray" his own mother for my sake.

If he wouldn't talk, then so be it.

Neil was still searching for a suitable bone marrow donor for Hiram, but for some reason, it was proving to be a difficult task. Given his resources, this shouldn't have been the case unless he wasn't trying hard enough, or Hiram's bone marrow was particularly rare.

I had informed him about Karina's visit, but he hadn't rushed over, seemingly unfazed by the situation here.

The more he acted like this, the more suspicious I became.

However, Hiram seemed oblivious to the abnormality. He still told me every day how much he missed his dad, his grandparents, but he rarely mentioned missing his mom.

Watching him sleep peacefully in bed, my mind was a whirl of thoughts and emotions.

My reverie was broken by the ring of my cell phone. It was Stella.

Ever since I started caring for Hiram at the hospital, Stella and I hadn't been in touch as often, mostly because she too was wrapped up in her own drama with Mitch.

"Rena, I'm at the same hospital as you," Stella sighed as soon as I picked up the call.

"You're at the hospital too? Are you okay?" I asked, my heart lurching.

"It's not me, it's Mitch. He broke his leg," Stella explained, her voice full of annoyance.

I gasped in surprise. Mitch broke his leg?

Stella then filled me in on the details. The brilliant Mitch, on his nth attempt to scale the walls of Stella's house, finally met his match and broke his leg.
