The Alpha Twins' Elusive Mate novel Chapter 2

Fiona

The worry in Harry's gaze does a lot of things to my stomach, but mostly makes it warm and fuzzy.

He gently touches my cheek and stands up from his chair by my bedside. "You're finally awake. I'll go get you some medicine."

"Thank you," I tell him, even if I am very much confused at his behaviour. Wasn't he cold to me before?

I groan as I sit up in the bed. A pained gasp escapes me when I rest on my injured wrist by mistake. Usually, I would have healed up by now, but my blood loss must have hindered my healing ability somehow. I sigh.

Harry steps back into the room, a steaming bowl in his hand. I instantly recoil from the smell of the broth "What is that?" I ask, putting an arm around my nose.

He smiles, exposing his dimples. "It smells really bad, I know, but it'll get you up on your feet far faster than human drugs." He walks over to my bedside table and places the bowl on it. His eyes find mine as he straightens, and there's no trace of the distant person he normally is around me.

"Drink up," he abruptly says, breaking the awkward silence.

I pick up the bowl, swallowing hard. "How's Alice?"

Harry is silent for a moment, and I almost think he's about to withdraw. I'm mentally slapping myself when he finally speaks. "She's fine, all better now. Thanks to you."

I nod. "I'm glad." However, I can't stop myself from asking, "Why aren't you with her? You never seem to like my presence that much."

He raises a brow, as the side of his lip quirks up. "What gave you that impression?"

Maybe the fact that you never look at me like a decent person? "It's just strange, seeing you here." I look into the bowl and instantly regret it. It's full of a green steaming liquid and has brown leaves of some sort shredded in it.

I squeeze my eyes shut and drink everything in one go, despite the heat. The bitter concoction runs down my tongue, disorienting my senses for a moment. My throat warms in response, and tingles spread all over my body. I return the bowl to him.

"Wow," is all I can say.

"I told you it's effective." He drinks what's left of the pungent broth like it's simply water. He turns around, about to leave, when he says, "And I care about you, Fiona, even if you don't believe it."

He exits the room.

How did he even know where my room was to rake me? After asking myself that I roll my eyes into my head. Of course, he's the Veratis Alpha, he most likely has access to anywhere within the pack.

I can't stay here longer, though. I've done what I was needed for, and it's time to leave before my identity is compromised.

Once the wound on my wrist stops throbbing, I get out of my bed and pack my few belongings into my backpack. I never planned to stay long, so I didn’t pack much when I left home.

My mating ceremony will start in a few hours, and by werewolf tradition, whoever my fated mate is will sniff me out until I'm found. It would be a disaster if my mate found me here, because my cover would no doubt be blown. My family would never ake me seriously if after everything I had set out to accomplish, I was tied down by some random wolf in a mating bond.

I rub my hand across my forehead, trying to soothe the sudden itch.
