The Contracted Ever After novel Chapter 236

Cordelia tumbled down the staircase. Her stomach and head were throbbing in a painful chorus. She tried to get up, but her body wouldn't cooperate.

Downstairs, Brenda had just finished her overtime shift when she heard a thud from the upper level. Curious, she went to investigate, only to find Cordelia sprawled at the bottom of the stairs, blood trickling from a cut on her forehead.

Without wasting any time, Brenda dialed 911 and accompanied Cordelia to the hospital. After a thorough examination, the doctor reassured them that it was only a severe shock, not a miscarriage. He patched up Cordelia's forehead and advised her to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation.

Cordelia, weakened and pale, had a hunch about the person behind her fall. Brenda had previously told her about Manda, a woman who was always lurking around the office, refusing to leave even though she had been transferred to an dead-end position.

"You gave me quite a scare. I'm just glad I was working late so that I could find you." Brenda was still visibly shaken.

“When did Manda leave the office yesterday?” Cordelia asked Brenda.

Her question surprised Brenda. “You think someone pushed you? Do you suspect Manda? But she left early that day.”

Cordelia managed a weak smile. “Never mind. I'm not accusing anyone.”

She didn't share her suspicions with Brenda, who already had a grudge against Manda. If Manda was indeed responsible for the intentional harm, Brenda would definitely not let her off the hook. Cordelia feared the situation could escalate and become uncontrollable.

“I’ll check the security footage. If it was her, she won’t get away with it,” Brenda stated.

“Don’t bother. There are no cameras in the stairwell. She must have planned it that way.” A cold shiver ran down Cordelia's spine as she recalled the push from behind. Being pregnant didn't seem to deter her assailant. Would Deanna and Samantha have already made a move if they knew she was carrying Ronan's babies?

Their tactics would be far more dangerous, possibly even rendering her infertile. The thought sent chills down Cordelia’s spine.

She was lucky Brenda was working overtime this time, but what about next time? It seemed that the fact she was carrying Ronan's babies had to remain a secret. You never could be too careful.

“Oh, by the way, are you free tomorrow?” Cordelia asked Brenda.

“If you need me, I'll make time. What is it?”
