Ronan called Brooklyn into his office.
This was Brooklyn's first time in Ronan's office, and she felt both nervous and scared.
She had a hunch that Ronan wanted to talk about Cordelia.
Brooklyn looked at Ronan and trembled with fear, unable to understand how Cordelia could have such a close relationship with a man like this.
"Did Cordelia meet Jamie last Saturday?" Sure enough, the first thing Ronan mentioned was Cordelia.
At this moment, Brooklyn felt like she was in a hot seat with Ronan acting as a lie detector. She didn't dare to withhold any information from him.
She told Ronan everything about seeing Jamie at the bookstore that day and how Jamie took them to his accounting firm. Cordelia was very interested in that kind of working environment, and Jamie mentioned that they were currently hiring assistants, suggesting Cordelia to consider it.
"He only gave her a book? No notes?" Ronan asked Brooklyn.
"Uh-huh, Jamie said he'll give her the notes in a few days."
"I see." Ronan frowned again, hinting that there could be more to their meet-up than what Brooklyn had just told him.
"Mr. Evans, I've advised Cordelia that applying for a new job isn't easy and she should think it over. But she's been dreaming about this kind of work environment since she was 15. Plus, she's fed up with all the gossip about her in our company." Brooklyn's words also indicated that Cordelia's interest in the firm had nothing to do with Jamie.
"She said that herself?" Ronan raised his eyebrows slightly.
"Yes, she did."
"I see." said Ronan.
"Mr. Evans, you should know that Cordelia wants to earn her place in the company by her abilities, not by these rumors." Brooklyn added, trying to portray Cordelia as a professional woman, not someone who would change jobs just because she fancied someone.
"You can go now. And don't tell Cordelia about this."
"I definitely won't tell her." Brooklyn thought, if she stirred up more trouble between them, it would be a real mess.
After Brooklyn left, Ronan sat in his office deep in thought for a while.
In the afternoon, the HR Department issued new office rules, making some minor adjustments to the original content and adding a new one: colleagues should respect each other and refrain from spreading rumors. Violators would be fined $200.
Upon seeing this new rule, people in the office started whispering, saying that it was Mr. Evans' way of addressing Cordelia's situation.
"Shush, no gossiping, or you'll be fined 200 dollars."
They all ridiculed the new rule.
Cordelia also found it troubling: why did this new rule feel like it was custom-made for her?
After work, Cordelia still had some unfinished tasks, so she let Ronan leave first.
At 8 p.m., Cordelia finally finished all her work.
The office was now empty and very quiet. Cordelia opened Jamie's application form and started filling it out.
It was several pages long, and Cordelia didn't finish until nine. After completing it, she sent it to Jamie.
Cordelia took a cab back to the Evans family's house. She was exhausted and threw her bag and phone on the bed before heading to the bathroom.
The moment her phone landed on the bed, it rang several times.
Ronan glanced sideways and saw "Jamie."
Jamie again!
