A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 348

Matilda and Logan were leisurely pushing a shopping cart through the aisles of the supermarket, with Godfrey trailing behind, his attention glued to his phone screen. When it came time to check out, Godfrey stepped up with a generous offer to pay, but Matilda firmly pushed him away. "Let's handle our own, no need for that. Next time, it's on you," she said with a smile that brooked no argument.

It was a testament to her character, always clear about boundaries, never one to take advantage without cause.

As Matilda reached for her wallet, a piercing scream suddenly cut through the hum of the supermarket. Instinctively, she turned, positioning herself protectively in front of Logan. But before she could assess the threat, a figure lunged at her, wrapping a cold, steel grip around her neck and yanking her backward.

The sharp edge of a knife pressed against her throat, and Matilda, looking into the eyes of her assailant, saw a terrifying rage. "I've finally found you! You wretched woman!"

The unsettling feeling of being stalked wasn't just her imagination.

The crowd around them screamed, someone fumbled with their phone to call the police, but the man's intentions were clear—he was driven by a vendetta against Matilda, his own life be damned.

As he tightened his grip, draining the color from Matilda's face, she gasped, "Who are you?"

She couldn't recall anyone she might have wronged to this extent...

"Do you remember my daughter, Ella?" the man hissed, the knife drawing a bead of blood down her neck, sending chills through her spine.

"Ella's father?" Matilda's voice was barely a whisper.

The fury in the man's eyes intensified as he dragged her backward, causing onlookers to hesitate before intervening. Godfrey clutched Logan close, who was screaming, "Mom! Mom!"

"You destroyed my Rachel, and now you've come for my Ella, turning her into a vegetable. You deserve to die!"

The man, identified as Carter, seemed beyond reason, spewing curses and accusations while the security staff hesitated to approach. "Heaven sees all! I am merely an instrument of justice here to rid the world of your evil. All this misery is your doing, and you will pay!"

Matilda's tears were a mix of pain and desperation as she tried to reason with him. "It wasn’t me... I didn’t hurt Rachel... I didn’t have anything to do with what happened to Ella..."

But her pleas fell on deaf ears. Carter struck her viciously, sending her sprawling to the ground before he lunged with the knife. Matilda rolled away just in time, avoiding a lethal blow, but Carter was relentless, grabbing her hair and pulling her up to her feet.

"All this time, without Yvan, without Adrian to protect you, I've waited for this moment. Your end is now!"

A slap sent Matilda reeling, blood spraying from her mouth, her consciousness fading. As bystanders attempted to intervene, Carter brandished the knife at Matilda's throat, threatening, "Step any closer, and I'll end her!"

"Go ahead, call the police! I'm ready to die, but not before I take this murderer, this less-than-animal woman, down with me!"
