After Matilda and Logan had left, Yvan remained frozen at the hotel entrance, lost in thought. Carl felt a pang of sympathy for him but also felt helpless. It was true; he had hurt Matilda and her son. It was only natural for them to reject his kindness.
Carl made a call to the staff at the Glory Hotel, asking them to deliver all the presents Yvan had prepared for Logan to the hospital room. Then, he carefully stored a crown he had intended for Logan, believing that one day, the young lad would indeed wear it with pride.
Not long after Matilda and Logan arrived at the hospital room, there was a knock on the door. It was the staff from the Glory Hotel, there to deliver the presents Yvan had gotten for Logan, ranging from his first to his fifth birthday. Logan was stunned; he hadn't expected them to follow through and deliver everything to the hospital.
Grabbing two huge bags filled with presents, Logan headed out.
"What are you doing?" Matilda called after him.
"Nothing," Logan replied with a smile, turning back to her. "Just returning some things."
Logan found a metal trash can in the small garden behind the hospital and threw all the gifts into it. Fearing Yvan might send someone to retrieve them, he decisively took out a lighter.
With a flick, he set the memories ablaze.
As the fire consumed the gifts, Logan's eyes, sharp and cold as forged steel, reflected the flames, honing their chill edge. He stood motionless, watching as Yvan's efforts were devoured by the fire. All the time Yvan had spent preparing these gifts was erased in an instant.
The toys crackled and popped, their tiny parts ejected by the flames, hitting the sides of the trash can and falling back into the fire.
In the biting winter wind, the fire grew fiercer, eventually reducing everything in the trash can to ashes under Logan's watchful gaze.
The breeze stirred up a cloud of ash, carrying with it the acrid smell of the burnt mixture.
Standing in front of the trash can, Logan's expression was as cold as Yvan's had ever been.
