The venom in his voice caught even Adrian off guard. The mixed-race man didn't say a word, just gently patted Logan on the back. "I don't have all the details, Logan. Your mom must have had her reasons for keeping this from you..."
When Matilda decided to keep this secret all to herself, how much did she have to bear alone?
Logan, in his naive curiosity, used to ask about Gideon over and over, each question stabbing Matilda's heart like a knife. He fell silent, lost in his thoughts.
...
Half an hour later, Adrian drove Logan to the hospital. The night was deepening. Logan, holding the bags Adrian had just bought him during their mall outing, stood at the entrance and waved, "See you, Adrian!"
"Take care," Adrian called out before whistling softly, "Be a good lad, alright? Listen to your mom."
You're all she's got, kid. She's leaning on you now.
Watching Adrian's car disappear into the night, Logan turned and headed towards the elevator. But as he passed the reception desk, he paused abruptly and looked back.
The hospital, especially at night, felt eerie and deserted, like a scene from a horror game. Logan's heart raced. Moments ago, the empty lobby seemed to echo with footsteps other than his own, faint but unmistakably real...
The dimly lit, almost hellishly cold lobby, with its buzzing machinery, sent a chill down Logan's spine. He stood his ground and called out, "No need to follow me anymore. I've already seen you."
Lately, Logan felt as if an unseen force was trying to infiltrate their lives. Inheriting his father Yvan's alertness, Logan's instincts were spot on – someone was indeed watching every move he and Matilda made.
He didn't know whether they were friend or foe, but hiding in the shadows... was definitely up to no good.
Logan frowned, "Are you going to show yourselves, or do I have to come find you?"
It was a bluff. In truth, he had no idea where they were hiding.
