That statement pierced through Yvan's soul like a thunderclap.
He stood there, staring at the woman before him, tears silently cascading down his face. His features were handsome, yet his eyes brimmed with sorrow.
The tears dropped onto Matilda's hand, burning like acid, almost instantly sending a sharp sting through her skin.
Matilda jerked her hand away and told Yvan, "Just go."
But Yvan didn't move.
Unable to contain herself, Matilda shouted, "Go! I don't need you here!"
Still, Yvan stood frozen. When he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse, as if he had been through a calamity, "Matilda... are you still mad at me?"
Matilda's laugh was laced with scorn, "Mad at you? Why would I dare? You're the great Yvan, after all. My life is too insignificant to blame someone like you."
The more she spoke in such a manner, the more ironic Yvan found it. Stepping closer, sensing her rapid breathing, he clenched his fists, "Matilda, I know I owe you an apology for the past, but can't you see my sincerity? Why do you insist on trampling over my true feelings?"
"Trampling?"
Matilda scoffed as if she heard a joke, "Yvan, using that word, don't you see the irony?"
Who was it that treated her so brutally, forcing her to entertain, to smile on command, to submit to every whim, and in doing so, took everything from her?
All the pain in her life was thanks to Yvan, and now he was accusing Matilda of trampling on him? It was like the pot calling the kettle black!
The scorn in Matilda's eyes sent a chill through Yvan's heart. His voice trembling, he asked, "What do you want then? Matilda, what do you really want?"
Was dangling his heart on a string amusing to her?
Matilda remained silent for a long time before finally saying softly, "Yvan, what I want... has nothing to do with you anymore."
