"Mr. Boyd..."
Carl was worried about Yvan's current state, but Yvan insisted that Carl leave first. As his assistant, Carl had no choice but to go. When he left, he saw Yvan sitting alone in the car, looking somewhat... pitiful.
Matilda and Godfrey had just come back from grocery shopping and noticed a van parked under their apartment building. However, due to the deepening night, Matilda couldn't see the man sitting inside clearly. She and Godfrey headed straight for the elevator, while Yvan watched her walk away and irritably pulled out a cigarette.
After dinner with Logan, Godfrey bid farewell to Matilda and her son. It was already nine in the evening. When he went downstairs, he saw the van still parked there, feeling puzzled but not overly concerned. After all, their neighborhood was upscale, and the van looked expensive, hardly belonging to anyone suspicious.
Matilda had never noticed a car parked under her building, silently waiting in the ignored moments of time.
Sleep eluded her that night until she got up to take Logan out for breakfast the next morning. When they went downstairs, the van was still there.
Unlike last night, the door was open.
A handsome yet disheveled man sat in the driver's seat, his eyes bloodshot, pinching the last cigarette between his fingers, already burned down to the butt. Realizing there were no cigarettes left, he clicked his tongue and tossed the butt away.
Only then did Matilda notice the ground by the open door, littered with cigarette butts.
She froze, then looked up at the man blocking her way home, doing nothing. Yvan, noticing Matilda's astonishment, chuckled lowly, "I just came to see you. Don't be so hostile."
"Oh," Matilda replied coldly, "I'm doing just fine."
Yes, she was doing just fine, surrounded by more and more admirable men.
But back then...
When Matilda was desperately holding onto her family, he didn't care.
When Matilda claimed her innocence, he looked at her coldly.
When Matilda was insulted and struck down, he remained indifferent.
