Logan peered into Yvan's eyes, his voice tinged with a mix of hope and skepticism, "Can I really trust you?"
"Yvan, is this just another one of your tricks?" Logan's doubt was like a needle to Yvan's heart, but he masked his pain with a show of resilience, replying, "Lean on me."
A line Logan had once read flashed through his mind: I won't make you call me a coward again, nor will I let you carry the burden alone. Wouldn't that be too distant? Cry and ask for my help, rely on me even if you're sniffling.
Emotions welled up in the boy's eyes, and suddenly, he stretched out his hand to Yvan, saying, "Then, let's make a pinky promise."
Yvan paused, then stepped forward and hooked Logan's pinky with his own, "Pinky promise."
"This is our secret, one my mom doesn't know about," Logan said, staring straight at Yvan. "A secret between men, known only to us."
Behind her back, unbeknownst to her, these two men—one big, one small—had forged a new common purpose, shielding her from the storms.
Perhaps Matilda was fortunate, for fate had brought Logan into her life without her realizing it, offering her the only redemption she might ever know.
...
After Yvan left that night, Logan chatted with R7CKY in bed about the sniper incident, asking, "Aren't you afraid of getting caught?"
R7CKY's laugh was irritatingly cocky, "If they wanted to catch me, they're way too late. I was an illegal immigrant from the start."
"..." This criminal seemed quite audacious.
Logan's lips curled up, "Then maybe I should report you."
