A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 645

Godfrey hadn't even gotten a word out before his mom started laying into him, giving him a piece of her mind in no uncertain terms. Chloe couldn't stand by and watch any longer. "Please, don't be so hard on him. We've only just started seeing each other. Everything's moving too fast for me..."

When Godfrey's mother turned to look at Chloe, her demeanor softened in an instant, her voice oozing with maternal warmth, "Oh, Chloe, I know you're just looking out for Godfrey. Don't you worry, dear. Godfrey would never let you down. If he ever did, we, the Walkers, wouldn't stand for it. You can rest assured, and if you ever feel slighted, you come straight to me..."

Chloe was visibly taken aback, having been on the receiving end of cold shoulders and snide remarks all her life, both at home with the Wilsons and at work. She was completely unaccustomed to such adoration and fumbled for words, "I... um..."

"There's no rush, dear. If you feel it's too soon, we can take our time," Godfrey's mom said, giving her a knowing wink. At that, Godfrey's sister stepped forward, slipping a thick envelope into Chloe's hand, "Here, take this. It's a little something from us to you, and a belated Happy New Year."

Chloe, still gasping in disbelief, managed to say, "For me?"

"Of course," teased Godfrey's sister. "Once you've taken the Walkers' money, you're one of us. Joining the Walker family is no small affair—you’re in for the whole ride!"

Chloe's cheeks flushed with embarrassment, "But... doesn't that mean I'm practically part of the family? I can't accept this..."

Godfrey could only offer a helpless smile, watching the scene unfold. His family was nothing if not enthusiastic, always eager for him to settle down with a good girl. And now that Chloe had appeared, there was no way they were letting her slip away.

"Let me tell you, Chloe, you have such soft skin. You’re a godsend; otherwise, Godfrey might end up married to the kitchen for life."

Godfrey's mom was utterly taken with Chloe—her radiant skin, pretty face, and fine figure. She looked perfect next to her son, a match made in heaven.

She had already run through the mental checklist of welcoming Chloe into the family, envisioning the joyful dinners and the added warmth she'd bring into their home. The mere thought brought a wide smile to her face.

Thus, the more she looked at Chloe, the more pleased she became. To her, Chloe's willingness to stand up for Godfrey was worth more than any prestigious background. After all, what mattered most was her son's happiness.

Then, turning to Matilda, Godfrey's mom's inner matchmaker kicked into high gear. "Aha, Godfrey, your friend Matilda is raising her kid on her own, right? Why don't you introduce her to your brother?"

Matilda looked as though she'd been struck by lightning, now suddenly dragged into the fray.

Waving her hands in protest, she said, "Oh, no, not me. I'm not ready for that."

"But it's double the joy," insisted Godfrey's mom, motioning for her eldest to come over. "Mark Walker! Come here, come here!"
