He hated infidelity? He was the unfaithful one!
I shook his hand off. “No, thanks. You’re not my type.”
Myron’s jaw dropped, a look of mock heartbreak on his face.
“I’m not that bad, am I?”
“You’ve got the will, but not the guts. Listening to you would be a disaster.” I snorted and walked out. Myron called after me, calling me “sister-in-law” and begging me to reconsider, then muttered something about it being “too late if he doesn’t recognize you soon.” The last part was too quiet for me to catch.
As I stepped out of the office, I overheard someone in the breakroom mentioning that the event organizer’s last name was Lancaster. Before I could listen more closely, Jacob came up to me, a bright smile on his face.
“Zephyra, I heard you’re participating in the design competition! I just looked it up, and both of the masters are coming this year to find an apprentice. You’re so talented, I’m sure you’ll get it!”
Everyone dreamed of being chosen by one of them, especially Mr. Taylor. Becoming his apprentice was a mark of true genius.
My eyes flickered as I remembered something. I was about to nod when a sneer cut through the air.
“A pretty face is still just a pretty face, no matter how hard it tries. Jacob, I told you to get your eyes checked. You’re clearly blind. Instead of supporting her, you should be supporting Linda.”
A small group had gathered in the breakroom. Linda, holding a cup of coffee, gave me a cold, mocking smile from a distance.
This time, she wasn’t as overtly aggressive as before, but one of her cronies piped up. “Mr. Taylor once said he had found the perfect candidate for his final apprentice, someone with incredible talent, but he was turned down. Do you know who that was? It was Linda!”
The comment immediately drew gasps of envy from the others. “No way! That was Linda?”
“Oh my god, we’ve been working with a master all this time!”
My eyebrow arched. Did Louis go around trying to recruit apprentices often?
“Oh, really? Do you have proof?”
