I smiled at his words. It was true that marrying Steven was a step up for me socially. But I wasn’t aiming to become a billionaire; I just wanted a better life than my last one.
“Myron, you’ve tried to persuade me a few times now. I just want to ask you a few questions. How does a normal man act when he likes a woman?”
Myron thought for a moment. “Men are different, so they express love in different ways. But they’re always especially good to the person they like. Uniquely good.”
A cold, humorless laugh escaped my lips. “Do you know a woman named Verna?”
A flicker of change crossed his handsome face. “No.”
The curve of my lips deepened. “Then go look her up. Once you have, you can decide if you want to be Steven’s advocate or my boss.”
Myron was silent.
I looked at him seriously. “Regardless of what happened at the competition today, I will be leaving Star Corp. sooner or later. I kept Linda on not because I forgave her, but as a favor to you. You were the first person outside my circle to help me when I was at my lowest, and I’m grateful. Linda may be a bitch, but she’s competent. If you keep her, you won’t have a high turnover rate among your senior staff.”
Myron immediately understood. He shot up from his chair. “You’re leaving? When?”
I looked at him, my faint smile tinged with apology. “I’m just giving you a heads-up. Now that the competition is over, I have to go study with Mr. Taylor. I’ll have to leave eventually. You should start looking for a suitable replacement for me.”
Myron’s gaze sharpened. “If you want to study with Mr. Taylor, you can go whenever you want. A company as big as mine can wait for you. But I don’t think you’re leaving for an apprenticeship. You’re planning to run, aren’t you?”
I raised an eyebrow. For the first time, I saw a sharp, perceptive side to the usually carefree Myron.
He was right. After the divorce and Uncle Julian’s surgery, I was going to take my uncle and move somewhere Steven could never find us. Steven was too powerful. Generations of his family had built an empire I could never topple. His starting point was a place my finish line would never reach. I didn't want to change anything; I couldn’t get revenge. Out of sight, out of mind. The best solution was to stay far away from him.
