I returned to the room to the sound of running water from the bathroom. My mind was a mess.
After a long silence, I walked to the bathroom door and knocked.
“Steven, I left your clothes by the door.”
A deep, hoarse voice answered from inside. “Okay. You go to sleep first.”
I pressed my lips together, remembering what Myron had said about the drug being potent enough to cause physical harm.
The thought of calling a doctor flickered through my mind, but then another of Myron’s comments surfaced.
He’d said that after my accident, Steven had spent a fortune working with the police to search for me in the ocean for days. Then he'd spent several more days here with me, losing an astronomical amount of money in the process—a figure I couldn't even begin to imagine.
I stood there stunned for a long moment, caught between the conflicting reports of Steven being broke and Steven spending a fortune on me. I finally came to one conclusion—
Steven and I had a deeply troubled history. I had targeted him, but when I was in trouble, he spared no expense to help me.
Taking a deep breath, I gripped the bathroom doorknob. It wasn't locked. I turned it and pushed the door open, stepping inside.
The room was surprisingly cool, with no steam in the air, only a chill that washed over me.
I clutched the hem of my shirt, not daring to look up at him. My heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would burst from my chest. My face was burning, and even my neck felt hot.
“Steven, I… I can be your antidote!”
The man under the shower was still fully clothed. The wet fabric clung to his body, outlining his muscles even more starkly than if he were bare.
His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at me through the curtain of water. He seemed utterly bewildered, yet the fire in his gaze burned even hotter. His voice was raspy.
“A moment ago you felt I was forcing myself on you. Why the sudden change of heart?”
