I froze, trying to decipher his words. Did he mean he'd made a deal with Queena to marry her in exchange for our freedom, or something else entirely…

Just as I was thinking, Queena abruptly turned the phone back to herself. Her makeup was flawless, and she smiled at me. "We're just about to head out for our marriage license. We'll be sure to save you a piece of the wedding cake."

Before I could say a word, Queena hung up.

Rachel looked at the phone. "Wait, she just hung up like that? Are they really getting married?"

I handed the phone back to Nelson and waited until he left the room before answering, "What else?"

This was Queena's goal all along, wasn't it?

Disappointment was written all over Rachel's face. "I thought Steven was just stalling to save you."

My expression hardened. "He was stalling. He just didn't find us in time."

Hearing this, Rachel nodded thoughtfully.

After learning that Steven and Queena were getting their license, time seemed to crawl by. I paced relentlessly around the room while Rachel sat on the floor watching me.
