Our marriage had been an arrangement, brokered entirely by his grandfather. Over the past year, the old man was constantly giving me terrible advice on how to win Steven’s heart. I always pretended to follow it, reporting back that his methods were working wonders just to put his mind at ease.
Now that he knew we hadn’t even consummated our marriage, he must have suspected something was wrong, though he was too kind to say it directly. Listening to him, I felt a wave of melancholy. He was right. If a woman could win Steven’s heart, she would have a wonderful life. Just look at Verna, an ordinary person who would soon be catapulted into a life of adoration and luxury.
Too bad. I no longer had any hope or desire for Steven’s love. A man was not a reliable foundation. A woman had to be her own strength.
I smiled brightly at the old man. “I’ll do my best, Grandfather. Please don’t worry so much.”
He suddenly gave me a conspiratorial wink. “You two will be sharing a bed tonight. Remember to seize the opportunity. I want a great-grandson soon.”
My smile twitched. His grandfather had no filter. In my past life, the only reason Steven had touched me was because I took advantage of him. Now, he wouldn’t look twice even if I were lying naked in front of him. Still, I played along. “I know, I know. I’ll work very hard on giving you a great-grandson.”
Just then, Steven emerged from the kitchen, his sleeves still rolled up, looking unfairly handsome. “I’m going to take a shower.”
The moment he was up the stairs, his grandfather gave me a little push. “What are you waiting for? Go on up! You two should shower together.”
