Chapter 11 About Benjamin
Amelia barely knew anything about Benjamin.
All she had was that night-
that chaotic, blurred, way-too-intense night.
She remembered how fierce he’d been.
He was drugged back then. She’d tried to get away more than once, but even half-conscious, Benjamin had terrifying strength.
Those big hands of his wrapped around her ankles like iron, dragging her right back without effort.
She endured him all night, and when she finally got out of bed the next morning, her legs were shaking.
Later, she found out she was pregnant.
After that, she secretly looked him up.
What she learned only made him more intimidating to her.
Daniel caught the flicker of fear in her eyes. He cleared his throat and spoke with surprising seriousness.
“Amelia, don’t worry. Benjamin’s temper isn’t small, sure-but he’ll treat you and Nina well. He’s responsible. And he clearly has feelings for you. Otherwise, you two wouldn’t have a kid together.”
None of that comforted her.
She and Benjamin weren’t some destined couple.
They were an accident-nothing more.
“We’re really not what you think,” she said, cutting him off. “Anyway, let’s not talk about it.”
She exhaled slowly and shifted the topic. “Daniel, you should take Nina and get something to eat. My manager should be here by now-I need to go find him.”
She was checking in about upcoming projects.
Even if she lived with the Graham family now, she still needed to work.
She refused to rely on them for food and housing like some freeloader.
“Alright,” Daniel said gently.
He took Nina in his arms, holding her little hand and telling her to say goodbye to mommy.
“Bye-bye, Mommy! Take care!”
Nina waved her soft little arm, her voice warm and syrupy.
She knew Mommy worked very hard.
Amelia leaned in to kiss her round cheek one more time before heading out of the stairwell.
Once she left, Daniel carried Nina out.
“Un-coo Dan’el, Nina hungry!”
She patted her round belly for emphasis.
Recently she’d fallen in love with eating real food-she didn’t even cling to her baby bottle anymore.
Daniel freed a hand and patted her tummy.
“Alright, sweetheart. Let’s get you fed.”
The banquet dishes were fancy, but absolutely not kid-friendly, so he had the kitchen prepare something suitable.
Soon the food arrived.
Nina sat on Daniel’s lap, eyes wide as she watched the noisy banquet unfold, opening her mouth obediently whenever he fed her a bite.
William had eaten countless delicacies in his life, but that cold pancake felt more delicious than all of them.
“Thank you, sweetheart,” he said, taking a big bite. “Delicious.”
Nina giggled proudly and rubbed her soft, squishy cheek against him-softer than the pancake itself.
“Grandpa, play!”
And that was that.
William carried her straight to the playroom.
While they were playing, Daniel took the chance to call Zoe.
He tried several times.
She didn’t answer once.
He texted her.
No reply.
Daniel’s brows tightened in frustration-
just as Amelia returned home.
“Daniel, where’s Nina?”
“In the playroom with William.”
They stood together in the living room as Amelia hesitated, then finally spoke,
“My manager contacted me. I got an audition for a drama… and a spot on a variety show. Both are pretty good opportunities.”
