Early the next day, Nina saw her tiny backpack and walked over to grab it.

Chloe was surprised when she saw Nina holding the backpack.

She asked, “Nina, are you gonna put on your backpack and go to school by yourself?”

Nina shook her head.

She walked away without looking back and mumbled, “Frow it.”

Nina didn’t want her backpack anymore.

She asked, “Are you going to throw your backpack away?”

She thought that if Amelia put the backpack on her, she’d have to go to daycare.

So if she threw the backpack away, she wouldn’t have to go.

Chloe laughed helplessly and said, “Nina, throwing your backpack won’t work. You still have to go to school.”

She walked around Chloe and, right in front of everyone, tossed the backpack over the balcony.

Amelia followed right behind her. After Nina threw it, Amelia said calmly and firmly, “Go pick it up. Throwing the backpack won’t help. I can buy you a hundred more.”

With Amelia keeping her in line, Nina had a tough morning.

After breakfast, Amelia took her to Sunbeam Daycare again.

Nothing Nina said or did to protest worked.

Nina refused to take naps for three straight days at daycare.

On the fourth day, Amelia checked the camera at noon. She saw that after Nina had begged the teacher in vain, the little girl sadly pulled her small blanket over her head.

Once hidden under the blanket, Nina cried a few times softly.

Then she went quiet.

Lucy, who’d been gently comforting her, lifted the blanket. She found Nina had already fallen asleep.

Even in her sleep, Nina still looked sad.

Friday arrived, and it was raining.

Nina had never met Russell or Sarah before.
