Gideon walked up to them. "What a coincidence, Mr. Ferguson. You're here too."
York replied, "Yes. I had a drink with Felix."
Gideon instantly understood the implication in York's words. He glanced at Claudia and explained, "I was just passing by and needed to discuss something with Dr. Watkins."
York discreetly glanced at Claudia. She lowered her eyes, avoiding the gaze of both men.
Her family lived in the city center. The Harvest family estate, Harvest Hospital, and Gideon's new commercial street were all on the west side of town. He always said he was 'just passing by.' It was such a blatant lie.
York once again adjusted the coat around Claudia's shoulders. He told her, "It's windy out. Go back inside before you catch a cold."
Claudia forced a smile, gritting her teeth as she mumbled an "Okay."
York stared at Claudia's obedient expression, a warmth spreading through his chest. Her compliance used to belong only to him. He was the one who hadn't cherished it.
York fought to suppress the surging emotions within him and forced himself to turn and leave.
As Claudia watched York's car slowly drive away, she let out a quiet sigh of relief. If it weren't for the fact that he had died suddenly from a heart attack in her past life, and her fear that it might happen again, she would have provoked him until he was half-dead with anger, just to make sure he never came back with this new clingy act of his.
Gideon followed her gaze to York's taillights. "What, can't bear to see him go?" he asked sourly.
Claudia turned her attention back to Gideon. Thank goodness, he hadn't made a dirty joke.
She rolled her eyes at him. "Gideon, what did you really come here for?"
The more time she spent with Gideon, the harder it was to take him seriously. The man everyone saw as the gentlemanly, reserved third son of the Harvest family was, in fact, not proper at all.
Gideon said to her, "I was hoping to borrow your restroom. Is that okay?"
Claudia was speechless. A man's gotta go when a man's gotta go. Now that he'd asked, how could she refuse?
Claudia looked at Gideon and couldn't help but frown. What had he just said a moment ago?
When her parents heard he was Claudia's colleague and boss, they quickly ushered him into the living room.
Gideon looked around the Watkins' living room. "Uncle, aunt," he said, "I'm in the process of decorating my new house, and the design of this apartment is beautiful. Would it be alright if I took a look around?"
Before Gideon had even finished his sentence, the orange Claudia had just picked up dropped back into the fruit basket. She and Gideon locked eyes. Gideon asked her with a perfectly straight face, "Dr. Watkins, may I?"
Claudia turned away and took a deep breath.
Her parents readily agreed. "Claudia, hurry up and give your colleague a tour."
Guiltily, Claudia led Gideon upstairs. Eddy bit into an apple and grumbled, "Couldn't they just discuss this over the phone? Why did he have to come to our house?"
