“Seriously, does she even know who she is? Pretending to be the Ballard family’s heiress? There’s always someone desperate to climb the social ladder, thinking they can fake their way into our world. It’s honestly pathetic.”
“And why is her dress exactly like Ms. Ballard’s?”
“Come on, it’s obvious. She must’ve found out what Ms. Ballard was wearing tonight and then got her hands on a copy. But Ms. Ballard’s is the real thing, and hers is definitely a cheap imitation. It actually fits her. Fakes belong in fakes.”
“You’re right. Ms. Ballard, don’t even bother arguing with her. She’s not worth your time. Just tell someone to throw her out. This isn’t a place where she can cause a scene.”
Claire’s hair cascaded in soft curls over her shoulders, while Madeline’s was pulled back in an elegant twist. That was the one way people could still tell them apart.
The crowd was getting more riled up by the second, voices rising as they demanded Madeline leave. Claire glanced at Madeline, her eyes sparkling with satisfaction, a smug little smile playing on her lips. She couldn’t wait to see how Madeline would handle this.
“Did you hear that, Ms. Imposter? Stop pretending and get out.”
Madeline didn’t flinch. She turned to Claire with a calm, almost amused smile. “You’re getting worked up for nothing. I’m only here because the Ballard family invited me. Why would I be kicked out?”
She slipped an invitation from her clutch and held it up, giving it a little wave. “See? This is my invitation, straight from the Ballard family. And yet, you want me gone. Why is that?”
