Laughter rippled through the room, sharp and mocking. Claire listened, her brow smoothing as she settled into a smug, satisfied smile.
“Ms. Imposter, I really don’t care that you showed up to the party,” she said, her tone light but her words cutting. “But wearing a fake designer dress to a Ballard family event is just embarrassing. Honestly, it's dragging down the whole party. Do us all a favor and take that cheap thing off.”
Madeline’s lips curved in a calm, almost amused smile. “You want me to take it off right here?”
“That’s right, right here. You had the guts to show up in a knockoff just to insult me, so you can deal with the consequences. If you don’t do it yourself, I’ll have someone do it for you.”
“Miss, you can’t,” Maxwell spoke up, his voice tense. “That’s way out of line.” He shot Claire a look, frustrated. Forcing someone to undress in front of everyone? That was beyond cruel. No real lady would ever act that way.
Claire just shrugged, her eyes glinting. “Why not? She wore that dress to provoke me. I’m just teaching her a lesson.”
She raised her eyebrows, her smile sugary sweet, but her words made it clear just how vicious she could be. She’s forcing another woman to strip in front of everyone, to stand exposed in the middle of the crowd. How was anyone supposed to recover from that? Did she really want to ruin someone’s life just to make a point?
Claire’s gaze lingered on Madeline, her expression full of smug satisfaction. Let’s see how you get out of this.
Most of the guests knew how cruel this was, but no one spoke up. It wasn’t their problem. And honestly, a lot of them seemed almost entertained by the drama, excitement buzzing just under the surface.
“This is insane!” Brady finally snapped, starting to move forward, but Josh grabbed his arm and stopped him.
Brady’s eyes flashed. “Why are you holding me back? Don’t you see what they’re doing to Madeline?”
Josh just grinned. “Madeline isn’t stupid. There’s no way she’d show up here in a fake dress. Just wait. She’s got something planned. But… where’s Julian? He was supposed to come with her.”
Something about the situation seemed off, and Josh glanced toward the door, eyebrows lifting. “Let’s check outside.”
Claire let out a breathy laugh, covering her mouth with her hand. “This gown was custom made by Bradley himself. And you think it’s a knockoff? Are you kidding me?”
Someone in the crowd snorted. “She’s lost it. Accusing Ms. Ballard of wearing a fake when she’s the one in the knockoff? She’s delusional.”
“Seriously, where does she get the nerve?” another voice chimed in.
The mocking grew louder, but Madeline’s face stayed serene. She didn’t even blink.
Claire’s grin stretched wider. “So, Miss Imposter, last chance. Are you going to take it off or not? If you won’t do it yourself, I’ll have someone make sure you do. Guards, get that dress off her. I won’t let some nobody ruin my party.”
Immediately, several guards moved in, closing in around Madeline.
