“Let's make next year a blast together,” Luna said, giving Logan's cheek a playful pinch. “Come on, get in. I had my brother pull some strings to get us a military jeep for the day. How's that for rolling out the red carpet?”
“More than enough,” Matilda chuckled, noticing a few people sneakily taking photos of them.
Luna rolled up her sleeves defiantly. “Let them take pictures! If we're not doing anything wrong, why worry?”
She swung the car door open for Matilda. “How long were you in San Francisco?”
“About a week, I guess. I was thinking of settling down there.”
“You should come back. We all missed you.” Luna climbed into the jeep next to her brother, Cyprian, who looked as dashing as ever.
He turned to greet them, his handsome face breaking into a smile. “Good to see you again.”
“Hello Mr. Layton,” Matilda said, reaching over to shake his hand. She felt the callouses in Cyprian's palm, a testament to his military life, and couldn't hide her surprise.
Cyprian greeted them briefly before starting the jeep, with his buddy beside him, another soldier, who turned around to greet Luna and Matilda warmly, “Hello, ladies!”
His booming voice took Matilda by surprise.
Luna slapped the soldier's shoulder from the backseat. “Ladies? She's my friend!”
The soldier immediately looked embarrassed. “I... I thought she was Mr. Layton's girlfriend...”
“Can you use a better word? Girlfriend? That should be my girlfriend, right Matilda?”
Matilda laughed, and so did Logan, who then asked the soldier, “So, you guys are all in the military?”
