Yvan's father paused for a moment. "Just a second." He wanted to have a word with Matilda.
"There we go, is Noel trying to play matchmaker for his son now?"
Yvan's father watched Matilda's retreating figure. "There are some things I need to discuss with an old friend..."
...
Twenty minutes later, a waiter invited Matilda to the adjacent balcony, mentioning that a distinguished guest wished to speak with her. As she entered, she immediately saw a silent figure standing opposite her, his features reminiscent of Yvan's, but his eyes colder than his son's—it was her once-called father.
Matilda nearly bolted, but Noel Boyd called out, "Please, wait..."
Noel, with a life of remarkable achievements and a reputation for being uncompromising, seldom used the word 'please' to ask for someone's presence.
Matilda, shivering, turned around, her gaze slightly withdrawn, yet she still managed to utter, "You..."
She held respect for Yvan's father.
Their generation's grievances shouldn't affect the kids, nor should they involve the previous ones.
"Matilda, I know you probably don’t want to see me..." Noel took a deep breath, "I’m here unannounced because I want to discuss some past events with you..."
Matilda, fighting her panic, sat down in front of Yvan's father. "Go ahead."
"I’m aware that your marriage wasn’t perfect, and that my son has done some unforgivable things to you, Matilda. How have you been lately?"
Matilda's eyes welled up with tears. She once called this man father, and then they became strangers. She never imagined that Yvan's family would still think of her.
