Chapter 38 I Want You

Upon waking up, Nancy was about to say something when Benjamin cut her off with a cold command to keep quiet.

The trio then headed back.

Once Nancy found out about Benjamin’s connection with Nina, her face lost its color.

She was well aware that walking out of there would land her in jail.

She thought about making a break for it, but with Benjamin around, it was a no-go.

Since escape was off the table, Nancy set her sights on another plan: luring Benjamin in.

If Nancy could get him on her side, she figured she’d be off the hook once they were out.

“Here, let me take your bag. You must be beat,” Nancy said in a soft, coaxing voice, and as they walked, she tried to snuggle up to Benjamin.

But before she could get close, Nina-who had been dozing in Benjamin’s arms-finally woke

The moment she saw the “bad teacher” who’d grabbed her coming closer, her eyes popped wide open.

She raised her little hand and whacked Nancy right across the face.

Pop-

The sharp sound of the slap made Nancy jolt, and Benjamin’s eyes fluttered.

“Bad… go ‘way!” Nina huffed, her chubby cheeks puffed up in anger.

The blow landed near Nancy’s eye, and she almost fainted from the pain.

If Benjamin hadn’t been there, she would’ve retaliated right then and there.

She took a step back, bit her lip, and swallowed the pain.

“Nina, I’m really sorry. I didn’t have a choice. I never wanted to hurt you. I was pushed into it. Can you forgive me? I really like you,” Nancy begged.

Nancy was starting to panic as Alistair still hadn’t shown up. She had no clue if he’d bailed or if something bad had happened to him.

At that moment, self-preservation was her top priority.

So, besides trying to charm Benjamin, she also had to butter up Nina.

But neither of them was falling for her act.

No matter how sincere Nancy sounded, Nina just stared at her and blurted out, “Lie!”

Nancy was a bit thrown off, but still tried to keep the lie going.

But Nina wouldn’t even give her a second look.

She finally noticed who was holding her.

She fixed her big, round eyes on Benjamin, her face dead-serious.

Benjamin stared back.

They stared at each other in silence for a couple of seconds.

Then, a look of puzzlement crossed Nina’s face.

She was questioning if this was really her dad.

Her dad always just lay around at home. Why was he suddenly here, holding her?

As Nina stared, the confusion turned into a curious excitement.

She lifted her little hand.

Expecting her move, Benjamin quickly grabbed her hand before it could land another slap.

“What are you doing?” Benjamin asked the chubby little girl, whose feisty personality was a far cry from her cute looks.

Nina couldn’t move her chubby little hand as it was firmly held.

Pouting, she whined, “Daddy… no move…”

She intended to give a little tap to check if it was really her dad.

Once Benjamin grasped her thought, he spoke up in a calm voice.

“I’m awake,” he explained his presence. Just because he’d woken up.

Nina’s eyes sparkled with curiosity as she sized up her newly-awakened dad.

“You want Nina?” she asked, tilting her head cutely, her baby voice soft and sweet.

This question was at the top of her mind!

Benjamin fell silent for a moment.

Then, in his cold, matter-of-fact tone, he replied, “Yeah.”

This little chubby baby in his arms was an unplanned blessing.

But since she’d become part of the Graham family, Benjamin wouldn’t turn his back on her.

People often said he was like a cold-blooded robot, yet his moral compass included a strong sense of responsibility.

After his short answer, Nina kept staring at him, waiting expectantly.
