Chapter 46 Be a Proper Dad
Nina’s arrival took Benjamin by surprise.
He was caught off guard, nowhere near ready to embrace fatherhood.
And Amelia understood; she’d never push him into a role he wasn’t prepared for.
After all, her decision to have Nina was her own, independent of Benjamin.

Amelia murmured tenderly, “Shh, don’t be upset, sweetie. Mommy’s gonna stay home with you these days, no work. Let’s just ignore Daddy, okay?”
To cheer the little one up, she produced several cute yellow rubber ducks.
“Let’s play with the ducks in the water, baby.”
“Okay!” Nina exclaimed, her mood instantly lifted, and she stopped babbling about her dad.
Meanwhile, Benjamin, lingering at the door, furrowed his brow.
He sensed an unspoken rift between him, Amelia, and Nina.
Amelia hadn’t said it outright, but there was an undertone, just like Nina’s, that assumed he didn’t want to be a father.
“Mommy… play out?” Nina stammered, her words coming in short, endearing bursts.
“Not tonight, honey. It’s pitch-black outside, and all the other kids are home. Come on, lift your arms so Mommy can take your clothes off.”
Amelia gently guided Nina into the small bathtub.
She gathered the ducks and other toys and let Nina start her water-filled adventure.
Then, she began to carefully wash Nina’s plump little body.
It was evident that the two of them didn’t need Benjamin around.
After a brief hesitation at the door, Benjamin retreated to his room, which was right next to Amelia’s.
Shortly after, dressed in loose-fitting black pajamas, Benjamin settled on the balcony sofa with his laptop. He logged in to catch up on days’ worth of messages.
An hour ticked by, and three times during that hour, his gaze wandered towards Amelia’s room.
After an hour, he shut the laptop and stepped out.
There, at the doorway, stood Amelia, on her way to fetch the excavator model Nina had been pestering for.
Their eyes met, and Amelia instinctively started to turn back.
“Amelia,” Benjamin called softly.

“Yes?” Amelia yelped, startled.
Benjamin paused for a couple of seconds.
“I’m not that scary,” he said, trying to ease the tension.
Amelia looked up at him again.
His face was strikingly handsome, but it was so cold!
She just couldn’t relax in his presence.
Still, she nodded and said, “Yeah, you’re not scary. I’m…not scared of you.”
Even she could hear the lack of conviction in her own voice.
Benjamin could tell she was just humoring him.
The atmosphere remained strained.
Not wanting to make things worse, Benjamin stepped aside, making way for Amelia to pass.
Just as Amelia took a couple of steps forward, Benjamin suddenly spoke up from behind, “I’m not against having Nina around. And I’ll do my best to be a proper dad,” he added, then turned on his heel and headed back into his room, closing the door behind him with a soft click.
Amelia stood rooted to the spot, a deer-caught-in-the-headlights look on her face. She stared blankly at the closed door, taking ages to process what Benjamin had just said.
“Does he… does he really accept Nina?” she mumbled to herself, still skeptical about Benjamin’s intentions.
But there he was, safely ensconced in his room, and she just didn’t have the guts to go knocking and have another chat.
“Ah, well. One step at a time,” she sighed.
Amelia had always been a glass-half-full kind of gal.
After all the jerks she’d encountered in her life, a positive attitude was the only thing keeping her going.
She wandered into the living room, picked up the toy excavator, and went back to play with Nina.
The little girl’s sleep schedule was all haywire.
Amelia didn’t let her play to her heart’s content. Instead, after a short while, she started humming a gentle lullaby, and soon enough, Nina’s eyelids fluttered shut.
There they lay, mother and daughter, looking as cozy as could be.
Over the next couple of days, Amelia stayed home, recuperating from her injuries and spending quality
time with Nina.
