Alice shook her head firmly-no matter how Nina tugged or begged her to come home, she refused.
Seeing that Alice really didn’t want to follow her, Nina’s lips puckered. She lifted her chubby hand.
“Nina call!” she said.
If she couldn’t bring Alice home, she’d take Alice’s number instead.
Alice glanced at the watch-phone on Nina’s wrist. After hesitating for a moment, she typed in her number.
When it came to setting a profile picture, she selected a default icon.
“Photo!”
Nina loved taking pictures, so she pointed at the blank avatar, urging Alice to snap one too.
Alice quickly shook her head and sighed, “I’m busy. No time.”
Then she added a few more signs. “Nina… don’t tell that person-your uncle-about me. Okay?”
She repeated the signs, mouthing the words for emphasis.
Nina stared hard and actually understood everything. “Okay!”
She agreed instantly and loudly promised, “Nina no tell!”
She meant she wouldn’t tell Daniel!
They didn’t “talk” long. Alice still had deliveries to make and no time to play.
Nina waved her chubby hand reluctantly. “Bye!”
But the moment she turned around, she found her mom waiting with crossed arms and a darkened expression.
“Mommy!” Nina, who had run off without permission, giggled as if she weren’t in trouble at all.
Amelia held her chubby hand, her tone sharp. “There are a lot of people here. You can’t just run around.
“If you run off and we can’t find you, Mommy won’t be able to get you back.”
Before Amelia could say more, she noticed Nina scratching again. She instantly stopped and checked her
neck and back.
Even though the weather wasn’t hot anymore, the snack/street had so many booths that the air was warm and stuffy.
Nina’s rash always worsened with heat.
Amelia didn’t dare linger. She picked Nina up and headed back immediately.

Amelia said, “It’s getting dark. We’re going home. We’ll come out again tomorrow.”
“No go home,” Nina whined-very clearly.
While refusing, she arched her back and pushed against Amelia’s arms, desperate to stay and play.

Amelia didn’t indulge her and said, “No. We’re leaving. Your daddy’s waiting at home. Don’t you want to play with Daddy?”
She used Benjamin as bait.
Nina shook her head with full determination.
“Daddy play. I no go home.”
Amelia continued, “But Daddy doesn’t want to play alone. He wants to play with you.”
Under Amelia’s gentle persuasion, Nina didn’t even notice she’d been placed into the car.
Soon, the car stopped.
Nina looked at the familiar front gate and let out a dramatic sigh. “Mommy… home now.”
Her exaggerated grown-up sigh made Amelia laugh, “Yes, we’re home. Time for a bath and bed.”
Nina scrunched her face. “No sleep…”
Nina said “no” to everything.
Amelia ignored her and took her to bathe.
Fortunately, Nina behaved in the bath. She had plenty of water toys, so she sat in the tub like a tiny boss, happily playing.
Afterwards, dressed in pajamas and clutching her toy, she insisted on finding Daddy.
Amelia needed to shower, so she walked Nina to Benjamin’s door.
Amelia told Nina, “Mommy’s taking a shower. Nina, come back by yourself later, okay?”
“Okay!” Nina promised loudly.
Amelia watched her enter Benjamin’s room and then returned to her own.
But unfortunately, Amelia didn’t see what happened next.
Nina took only two steps inside-then spun right back around. Like she sensed something, she ran to the front door.
“Un-coo Dan’el!” she called out!
Daniel stood at the door, his whole face filled with disappointment.
He’d failed again. He had tried to make Lucas use the police database to search for someone.

Lucas responded by locking him in a room, forcing him to watch two hours of police documentaries, then making him swear to obey the law and never misuse systems again…
Long story short, Lucas finally released him-after thoroughly scolding him.
Lucas had explained, very seriously, that using the police system to look up private citizens was a serious
crime.
Then he patted Daniel’s shoulder and sighed, “If it’s that bad, just become a cop yourself. Once you join the police, maybe you’ll finally learn some self-control.”
Daniel, still weighed down by failure, didn’t want to say another word.
He simply lifted Lucas’ hand off his shoulder and returned home in silence.
