Miracle Cutie (Amelia and Benjamin) novel Chapter 89

Chapter 89 A Call She Shouldn’t Have Made

Daniel walked into the house, and Nina ran straight toward him.

She had still been wearing her tiny slippers when she left the room.

But by the time she rushed over, the slippers had disappeared.

She ran over barefoot and wrapped herself around Daniel’s leg, pressing her soft, chubby bottom onto the top of his foot.

“Un-coo Dan’el, I eat meds!”

Nina lifted her round little face, eager to report that she had taken her medicine.

Daniel frowned the moment he heard that. “Why did you take medicine? When did you take it?”

Nina said, “I sickie!”

Daniel asked, “What kind of sick? Did you have a fever?”

Nina said, “No meds!”

They were not talking on the same wavelength at all.

Nina said whatever popped into her head, never actually answering his questions.

Daniel could not get anything useful out of her. He finally picked her up with one arm and opened his phone with the other, scrolling through the family chat.

He had not checked his phone for hours and had missed a lot of messages.

Amelia had explained in the group that Nina had hives.

William had sent many messages. His last message was his flight information.

. He had originally planned to come back in at least another week, but Nina kept calling him, crying that she wanted to see him. Then she got sick. William simply could not stay abroad anymore and wanted to rush back as soon as possible.

“You poor thing.” Daniel sat on the rug in front of the sofa in his room and placed Nina on his lap. “Hives are the worst. Even sleeping feels awful. What are you going to do tonight?”

Nina hadn’t thought about bedtime yet.

She squinted with a cheerful smile and handed him a toy she had just unpacked.

“Un-coo Dan’el, fix it!” she said.

Daniel could not fix anything. He truly had no talent for repairs.

Luckily, even if Daniel could not fix toys, he had plenty in his room.

Nina did not insist on making him repair the broken one.

She tossed the broken one aside and ran off to play with something new,

While Nina played happily with her toys, Daniel leaned against the sofa. The longer he leaned there, the more miserable he felt, almost like he had hives, too.

“Alice, where are you?”

He murmured her name in frustration, while not far from him, Nina was tapping at the number Alice had saved in her watch that afternoon.

She tapped and tapped, and somehow the call went through.

Nina didn’t even realize she’d called her.

She glanced at the screen a couple of times, did not see Alice appear, and simply went back to playing.

Alice’s phone was a second-hand one, old and laggy.

When she made video calls, her camera failed eight times out of ten, and this time was no exception.

Alice noticed her camera freezing and was about to hang up, but then she spotted Nina’s chubby face on the

screen.

That squishy little face was simply too adorable. Alice could not look away.

“Nina.” She formed Nina’s name silently with her lips, though no sound came out.

After mouthing the name, a faint smile warmed her tired eyes.

Watching Nina play slowly smoothed out the exhaustion she carried.

Nina could not sit still after playing alone for a bit. She wanted Daniel to join her. “Un-coo Dan’el, play!” she

said.

But Daniel was too upset to cheer up right away.

He beckoned her over. “Nina, come here. Let me hold you.”

Seeing her uncle looking so drained, Nina walked over in confusion.

She came closer and tilted her round face. “Why?”

Daniel did not answer immediately. He pulled her into his arms and buried his face in her little neck.

Nina drank powdered milk every day, and she carried a soft milky scent.

Daniel breathed in that scent again and again, and the tight knot in his chest finally loosened.

“Nina, I feel awful,” he whispered.

Daniel did not pretend to be some stoic adult in front of her. He showed his vulnerability without hesitation.
