234 The Person She Owes
Shane’s eyes shifted toward Seraphina, his voice low with concern. “Are you okay?”
Seraphina nodded. His gaze briefly scanned her, but it didn’t take long for him to notice a troubling detail. There was bloodstain on her cheek, and blood was slowly seeping out.
His expression darkened. With a dangerous glint in his eyes, he moved toward Jayton, who was still lying on the ground in agony. Shane stomped hard on Jayton’s chest, causing him to gasp in pain, his face turning ashen.
Jayton’s thoughts raced, cursing inwardly. This was a disaster he never saw coming. He never imagined things would spiral so out of control.
As he watched Shane approach with the intent to pick up a chair and smash it down upon him, Jayton felt his heart race with a mix of shock and terror.
However, just as he braced for the impact, a pair of hands shot out and grabbed Shane’s arm. Shane looked at Seraphina in confusion, his brow furrowing as if to ask why she had intervened. Seraphina, with a calm but firm expression, shook her head. “Let them go. I’m fine.”
Jayton felt as though he had narrowly escaped death’s grasp. Oh God, if Seraphina had arrived just a moment later, he would have been in serious danger.
With a scowl, Shane kicked him one last time, growling, “Get lost!”
Jayton scrambled to his feet, his group of lackeys following suit in haste. The onlookers, who had been watching in awe, began to disperse, murmuring among themselves. Some even cast admiring glances toward Shane and Seraphina, impressed by the turn of events.
Rowan walked up to them. His eyes fell upon the bloodstain on Seraphina’s cheek, and his heart sank with both guilt and worry. “I’m sorry. I’ve caused you harm.”
Before Seraphina could respond, Shane’s chilling gaze snapped toward Rowan, and Rowan froze. The intensity of the glare was enough to make Rowan’s breath hitch, his body trembling under the weight of it. It was as if this boy, younger than him by a few years, had the power to crush him with just a look.
Seraphina, sensing the mounting tension, stepped forward, placing herself between the two men. She gave Rowan a reassuring smile that seemed to immediately lift the pressure off his shoulders.
Seraphina said, “It’s actually my fault that you got involved in this. I should be the one apologizing to you.”
Hearing this, Rowan felt his heart warm. The sincerity in her voice and the kindness in her

words made him feel at ease. He couldn’t help but think back to the way she had effortlessly taken down those thugs earlier. She was strong, graceful, and undeniably admirable.
“You’re injured,” Rowan said, concern creeping into his voice. His eyes were fixed on the blood that continued to ooze from the wound on her cheek. “We should go to the hospital to get that
looked at.”
Shane, standing off to the side, gave Rowan a look of disdain. A man who needed a woman to protect him, in his eyes, was nothing more than a useless burden. Such a man was not worthy of standing by Seraphina’s side, let alone deserving of her risking her life for him.
A surge of hostility toward Rowan flared up within Shane. The dislike he felt for the man was sudden and intense.
“I’ll send Seraphina to the hospital,” Shane said, his tone dismissive. “You should go home. It’s not safe for a man to walk alone late at night.”
Rowan’s face flushed with embarrassment and perhaps a touch of shame. Whether it was from Shane’s words or his own discomfort with the situation, he wasn’t sure.
He glanced at Shane before turning to Seraphina. “Seraphina, I’ll head back first. Let me know if you need anything.”
“Okay,” Seraphina replied. She watched him walk away. The cab he had entered slowly disappeared into the distance.
Once the vehicle was out of sight, the smile on Seraphina’s face faded. Her expression grew hard and distant, the warmth draining from her features as though a mask had been removed.
Shane, who had been observing her closely, couldn’t help but be taken aback by the speed with which she had changed.
Without a word, Seraphina turned and began walking ahead. Shane quickly caught up to her. “Where are you going? The nearest hospital is on the other side,” he said.
“It’s just a minor injury,” she responded casually, as if the wound on her face were of no
consequence.
